October 2006

… when I first (drunkenly) saw it on Friday night. Now, I’m not so sure, but at least it’s proof that the New York City Cardinal contingent was out in full force.

World Series champs….

World Series champs….

World Effing Series Effing Champions….

Last night was amazing. Dewey’s was absolutely filled with Cards fans, and man did we ever celebrate in style. Pictures to come (and there’s actually a youtube of the championship moment on the horizon, if we are all lucky. It’s awesome, I saw it last night). I’m still floating, nine hours later…

I love everyone!

So, we’re one win away from…. uhh… uhhh.. I can’t even say it.

I’m just enjoying this strange, wonderful ride….

Let’s get this done, boys. I’m going to be drinking up a storm this weekend (sick or no).

… to enjoy this…. I mean, if you’d told me a month ago that the Cardinals would take the World Series to at least six games, I wouldn’t have believed it.

And here’s my thought about the lack of media respect: Get Over It. Seriously. ESPN and the other national guys are never going to respect the Cardinals, so might as well forget about them and enjoy this. There are about 28 other teams that would gladly exchange some obnoxious ESPN treatment to be in the World Series, so let’s stop complaining, shall we?

Anyway, I am still illin’, so I spent last night instant messaging with friends instead of partying with the New York City Cardinals crew. Hope to be feeling well enough to attend the watch party at Dewey’s, but am not terribly hopeful about that at the moment.

I have nothing to say about the Kenny Rogers thing, because I’m hoping that the series won’t be defined by it.

Anyway, my own dirt-y little secret: I’m feeling ill (as I mentioned on the previous post), and last night I felt so sick that I fell asleep somewhere around the seventh inning and didn’t wake up until this morning, when I promptly called in sick to work. Feeling much better now, though.

So… yeah. Fell asleep a little bit. During the World Series. Now, I was sick, so I have some sort of excuse. But nevertheless. I’ve made fun of my roommate for a solid year because he went to sleep when his team was playing in the World Series.

Oops. Should have known that one would come back to haunt me. So do I tell him the truth and come clean, or do I still have some credibility as a fan?

… This world series is substantially less embarrassing than 2004.

I’m at home and was planning to liveblog this, but am feeling ill (ugh, in time for the World Series, no fair) and not terribly witty. So I’ll try to write something up tomorrow, provided I’m feeling remotely human by then.

I absolutely loved this, from our family friend Jenny. She’s always very funny, but she especially outdoes herself here. At least two of my sisters have absolutely no interest in the World Series, and they probably feel the same way Jenny does.

I’m off to bottle my beer, then go to a matinee, then off to Dewey’s for the game tonight.

GO CARDINALS!

(Oh, and if you’re bored waiting for the game, check out our Game 7 photos from Dewey’s. Fun fun!)

Honestly? One of the better nights of my life. There were LOADS (I’m guessing 30-40) of Cardinals fans at Dewey’s tonight, and I got in the middle of TWO twenty-person hugs (the Yadi homer and the clinching moment). We were all miserable together during most of the game, but boy was it ever worth it when the ninth inning came along.

WOW. So THAT’s what it’s like for the players when they hug on the field and jump up and down. I got champagne sprayed on me, beer showers on my hair, (my hair is DISGUSTING right now, btw), several post-game shots of GOD KNOWS WHAT SORT OF ALCOHOL, and I made loads of new Cardinal friends.

AWESOME.

The Cardinals win the pennant. As Russ Hodges would say, “I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it. I DO NOT believe it.”

ETA: I’ve come to my senses and cancelled the show. So this post is technically no longer valid! GO CARDINALS!

From October 2:

me: tell me I’m being silly
Leah: you are way silly
me: but I just accepted an invitation to review a play on 10/19, which is fine, except that it would be game 7 of the nlcs
I’m being silly, no way are the cards getting that far
Leah: and my birthday!
me: No way!
Leah: plus, the cards are toast, so go to the play. :)
me: Sniffle
Leah: go bears!
me: maybe they’ll win in 6 games
Leah: um, yeah? ha

… So I’m missing tonight’s game (or at least, I’ll miss it up to 10:30 or so, when I’ll rush over to Deweys to catch the last few innings). OH THE HUMANITY! On the other hand, looking up this chat transcript let me know that today is Leah’s birthday! So happy birthday, Leah! And since I didn’t mention it yesterday, happy birthday to Suzanne!!!

GO CARDS!
